Renovation of the Woodland Crematorium and the three chapels

Gamla Enskede

The Woodland Crematorium with the chapels of Faith, Hope, and the Holy Cross at Skogskyrkogården will undergo a comprehensive renovation. The project is expected to last for approximately two years, starting late 2024.

The Woodland Crematorium with its chapels has a significant need for renovation and maintenance. The restoration is necessary to preserve the building for the future and ensure its cultural and historical value, as it is part of the World Heritage Site of Skogskyrkogården. The building’s design and appearance will be largely preserved, but some technical modernization may be necessary.

After the restoration, the building will continue to function as it did before, serving both as a venue for ceremonies and as a functional workspace for the chapel group and other professionals who temporarily use the facilities.

The Woodland Crematorium and chapels will be closed during the restoration

The restoration will require the closure of the Woodland Crematorium and the chapels of Faith, Hope, and the Holy Cross for the duration of the project.

The Cemetery Administration will provide extended hours for ceremonies in other chapels, primarily in the Resurrection Chapel at Skogskyrkogården.

The Sandsborg Chapel, located on the other side of Sockenvägen at the Sandsborg Cemetery, will also be available for funeral ceremonies throughout the restoration period. Normally, the Sandsborg Chapel is only open during the summer.

The Cemetery Administration is also in dialogue with nearby parishes about using their churches for funeral ceremonies in cases where the deceased was a member of the Church of Sweden and wanted a church funeral.

About the Woodland Crematorium

The Woodland Crematorium was designed by Architect Gunnar Asplund, inspired by the sketch work he did with Sigurd Lewerentz. The building was inaugurated in 1940. In the 1970s, a renovation was carried out under the leadership of Gunnar Asplund’s son, Hans Asplund.
