Traffic diversion at Norrtull

Vasastan

In September 2024, a traffic diversion project began at Norrtull, scheduled to continue until autumn 2025. This work is part of preparatory efforts for the further urban development of Hagastaden. The project will proceed in stages, with changes to the road network layout during the construction period.

2024

  • The pedestrian and cycle passage under Sveaplan will be permanently removed. It will be replaced by a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing and cycle path across Sveavägen. The tunnel is preliminarily scheduled to close during the night of 31 October 2024.

  • The recycling bins will be removed from Sveavägen 143, preliminarily during week 45. A new recycling station will be located at Hagagatan 25 C, starting from early January 2025. To find your nearest recycling station, search via Stockholm Vatten och Avfall.

  • The entrance to Dannemoragatan from Norra Stationsgatan will be permanently closed to vehicle traffic, and the northern part of Dannemoragatan will become two-way. This is preliminarily scheduled for November 2024.

2025

  • The entry and exit to Ynglingagatan from Sveavägen will be temporarily closed, and a turning area will be created. This is preliminarily scheduled for March 2025.

  • Vehicle traffic on Sveavägen’s service road will be redirected westward instead of eastward, and a turning area will be established. Simultaneously, the exit from Norrtullsgatan to Sveavägen will be permanently closed. This is preliminarily scheduled for April 2025.

  • The start and end routes for bus 2 will be slightly adjusted. See the image below for the new route and new drop-off stop. This is preliminarily scheduled for March 2025.

Existing stops marked with a red cross will be removed. The new route will include a new drop-off stop at Hagastaden, and the current stop on Ynglingagatan will become the first boarding stop towards Odenplan.

Pedestrian and cycle lanes

The streets will be designed with clear signage, good lighting, and safe, secure walking and cycling paths. Pedestrian and cycle lanes will be wider and easier to navigate.

Vehicle traffic

Traffic flow and capacity in the street network will remain the same as today. Certain areas will experience closures, which may require a detour.

Access to properties

Access to entrances and garages may be affected during the construction period. If closures are necessary, they will be coordinated in dialogue with those affected.

Noise

The additional noise from the roadworks is limited but may be experienced as disruptive during certain activities.

Trees

Trees along Sveavägen, near the Wenner-Gren Center, will be removed and replaced with new ones at a later stage.

This is what the temporary street layout will look like once completed, preliminarily in the fall of 2025. Please note that the layout will change in several stages leading up to that time.

Further urban development in Hagastaden

Once the traffic re-routing is complete, the area will continue its development with new streets and blocks. The proposed detailed plan for Eastern Hagastaden (östra Hagastaden) aims to transform today's traffic-heavy area into a vibrant urban environment around Norrtull.

The development of Eastern Hagastaden will also create a welcoming green entrance to Stockholm from the north, and a well-integrated connection with the National City Park, Hagaparken.
