Årstafältet

In Årstafältet, a completely new neighbourhood with approximately 7,000 residences is planned. It will feature mixed-use development, including residential buildings, preschools, schools, businesses, and a large landscaped park. In June 2018, the groundwork began for the initial residential blocks.

A new neighbourhood with great diversity

In Årstafältet, we plan to build approximately 7,000 residences for 17,500 new residents. The vision for Årstafältet is to be a place for encounters; meetings between different people, between the new and old, and between the city and the park. Diversity is a guiding principle, evident in the varied construction with different types, heights, shapes, and styles. We hope it will attract people with diverse backgrounds, cultures, family situations, and lifestyles to the neighbourhood.

The city aims to provide a good living environment for everyone moving here, with a vibrant city life including cafes, restaurants, shops, and attractive public spaces.

At the heart of Årstafältet, a park is being created, roughly the size of Skansen. It will include various activities, playgrounds, water features for stormwater management, and different types of greenery.

We are also planning for new offices, preschools for 1,800 children, primary schools with associated sports halls, and an 11-a-side football field.

Timeline

Årstafältet is being developed in multiple phases and will include various detailed plans. Groundwork for new roads, utilities, and more began in the summer of 2018. Concurrently with the groundwork, we initiated the work on the park. We are constructing a new stormwater retention pond, enhancing areas around Valla stream, and creating new activity spaces. The goal is to have a significant portion of the park completed when the first residences are ready for occupancy. The entire project is estimated to be completed by 2035.

  • Idea & Architectural Competition 2007–2009: Decision on the development of Årstafältet and implementation of an international architectural competition
  • Development of Winning Proposal 2010: Transformation of the winning proposal, Arkipelag, into a master plan and program consultation in the spring of 2010.
  • Planning Phase 2011: In the fall of 2011, detailed planning work commenced for the park and the first phase of new development. Subsequent detailed plans were then initiated progressively for the entire neighbourhood.
  • The first detailed plans gained legal force in 2017: The Municipal Council adopted the detailed plans for phase 1 and the park at the end of 2015. After a lengthy appeals process, the plans gained legal force in the spring of 2017.

The preparatory groundwork at Årstafältet began in June 2018. This includes activities such as constructing the new pond, reinforcing the ground, laying new utilities, and building roads ready for use by upcoming residences. As the residences become ready for occupancy, the streets and parks are completed in their final design with elements such as trees, furnishings, and lighting.

We continuously update this website when more detailed schedules, such as construction starts for residences and completion of various project components, become available. Currently, the estimate is that the construction of the first residences in phase 1 will commence in the fall of 2025.
