After more than 80 years, Slussen was worn out and therefore needed to be rebuilt from scratch. For example, the concrete was not resistant to salt water and had decayed in many areas, and due to inadequate foundations, settlements of up to 25 cm have occurred.
Slussen also needs to be rebuilt to reduce flood risks and secure the drinking water. The new Slussen allows for the diversion of nearly five times as much water from Lake Mälaren as before.
At the same time, the area is being adapted to meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's Stockholm residents with a new traffic solution that prioritizes cycling and walking. However, Slussen is not just meant to be a traffic solution, but also a meeting place where people can come together and socialize, as enabled by the new plans.
